Of Seasonal Gifts! – Adewale Sobowale

This is the season when the challenged, in various ways, are remembered. The old, the invalid, and the motherless, including the fatherless, could be lucky to be remembered.

However, I’m looking at it from another angle. Let’s assume that each gets a ram, a bag of rice and four litres of cooking oil.

How long will that take them?

I think we should have a better way of treating the have-nots in our midst. I still think a social security system should be in place.

If we had a meaningful social security system, we would be saving ourselves a lot of stress. Many petty crimes might not occur again, and I’m positive that they would be reduced.

This will save society the cost of administering justice. Our prisons, too, will certainly be decongested. I learned that most of our prisons are congested because they harbour petty crime suspects. In most cases, they are admitted to bail. However, they cannot fulfil bail conditions because they don’t have the means.

In some cases, petty crime offenders have been tried and fined. They are made to stay in prison because they don’t have the money.

Above all, I very much believe that if we have a social security system, we’ll be killing two birds with one stone.

We will protect our society from petty crimes and put bread on the tables of the poor!
