The news that the British Government intends building a new facility at the famous Kirikiri Prisons is a great one. Kilo dun bi arun iba, what’s as good as fever!
Our erstwhile colonial masters are always there for us. They know it that we don’t just have the means to take care of our teeming population of free people. So, if a person is unlucky to be imprisoned, he will suffer so many deprivations.
So, since they have now decided to be repatriating Nigerians who happen to have fallen out of favour with their laws, they just have to make provisions for them.
And they are very serious with the idea. If they aren’t, will they be ready to part with a fortune of 700,000 pounds sterling? I’m sure the Nigerian authorities will be praising their chi, as personal gods are called in Igboland.
We don’t have to bother about the Human Rights of the poor incarcerated folks. Do prisoners have anything like that? Even though Human Rights is said to belong to one from birth, that’s only theoretical.
Some of them could say they would be leaving cosiness for roughness. If they knew that, why did they disobey the laws of their host country? By the way, is this not their country?
Some might again say it’s a case of racism. Well, they can say whatever.
I understand the prisoners themselves must agree to being repatriated to make it legal. A prisoner is a prisoner. Agreements must be made on their behalf.
Someone once said the Europeans are taking our best and giving us their rejects. If it’s you, what would you have done?
It would even be an advantage for relatives to see some members of their families who had stayed put in the UK. Maybe people could now be making juju for those refusing to come home to offend to British laws.
Some are saying it’s a Greek gift. It could be Ghana gift, we need the money! Even if they want another prison, we will give them!!
