Cheap People! Cheap Lives!! – Adewale Sobowale

A couple of video clips is actually giving me a feeling of embarrassment. I feel embarrassed at how cheap human life has become in my fatherland.

I feel more embarrassed when I consider my infancy. Then, it was thought that people who were not yet in their seventies before they died should not be celebrated. People felt they were too young to die.

Back to the video clips!

I learnt that on Benin Ore Road, some officers of the Nigerian Customs Service accosted a commercial bus carrying some passengers. They asked the driver to ‘play ball’ as usual.

When the driver refused, they decided to check the baggage of the passengers. But the driver told them that the Customs at the airport had already checked the baggage.

Once they heard airport, the Customs officers were said to have cocked their guns. Meanwhile, one of the passengers decided to film what was going on with his phone. He decided to do it so that some strange elements would not get into their baggage.

Naturally, the Customs officers objected to the filming. They then threatened to seize and destroy the phone. I learnt the ‘cameraman’ said the cost of the phone would pay all the men’s salaries.

At that, there was an accidental discharge from one of the cocked guns. Unfortunately, the shots killed one of the guys who acted as fronts for the Customs men.

The saddest part was the wailing of a female who was saying the guy was shot because of five thousand naira.

Why must we debase ourselves to killing others? It doesn’t matter if it’s for money or not. Since we didn’t create lives, we shouldn’t go to the extent of killing others.

It’s only men in the state of nature who would have no qualms about that!
