Self Worth! – Adewale Sobowale

I still see the Buhari of 1984/85.

However, there’s no doubting the fact that he is the Hercules that has tried to clean the Augean stable of our national mess. In fact, it is an understatement to say that the mess stinks to the heavens with a very unpleasant odour

However, one thing keeps troubling me. From all indications, Buhari is all right. Even if he contests in 2019, and wins, he will rule till 2023. Unless the constitution is amended, that will be all.

The Nigerian constitution only allows presidents to serve two terms!

Personally, considering the fact that he only secured the presidency at the fourth attempt, I would have expected him to have a plan B, and if possible, a plan C, for ruling Nigeria.

It is not good enough for him to have a war against corruption as his only major programme. He is doing well in that, even though there are rumours here and there that some people close to him are also corrupt.

But one thing that is common to everyone in this country, apart from the high brow government officials, is economic hardship. It is so serious now that people have been stealing their neighbours’ pots of stew. They will keep on doing it to escape from hunger.

Now, is there any inkling that if Buhari should leave in 2023, we will not go back to our old ways? That’s on the assumption that Buhari himself is clean, anyway!

What I mean is that, in my own opinion, I believe we are only fashioning the system after an individual. I would rather we had built institutions.

But, in my Nigeria, our self worthiness is so low, or not even there. That’s why we need someone to always tell us what is right. However, the unfortunate thing is that the person correcting us may not even have the the right mores and values.

Until the society decides to say ‘no’ to bad things and ‘yes’ to good things, we will always be in need of a Messiah.

A people will always deserve it’s ruling class.
