Off the cuff? – Adewale Sobowale

Having watched the Iwuanyawu video clip severally, my thoughts are,

The man definitely didn’t speak off the cuff !

Somewhere in the speech, when he mentioned “Yoruba,” he stopped the sentence and said, “They are political rascals.”

As I said, I watched the video with rapid attention and severally too. A Yoruba will be right if they assume he was referring to the Yoruba, given the thread of his speech.

He obviously couldn’t have been referring to ANY Igbo!

But then, I think rascals are not peculiar to any group.

Moreover, what names don’t Yoruba call other people, ajokuta ma mumi, agbari Ojukwu, omo Ibo, malo, some will not even think of northerners as humans.

In the case of the Igbo, they typify the average Yoruba as a traitor, they call them ngbati ngbati, they look at them as weak souls.

The Hausa too have not done much better. They call the Igbo yanminrin. While serving in northern Nigeria, the principal of the school where I was teaching called me Awo, anytime I disagreed with him.

Oh well!

I just took it in my strides because I regard it an honour to be likened to the great sage!

I’m just using this opportunity to plead with Nigerians not to further inflame an already festering situation.

As far as the elections are concerned, the civilized way is to go to the courts unless we want a state of chaos which will do no one any good.
