No Telephony! – Adewale Sobowale

To say the pandemic has greatly affected our globe is an understatement of the year. People have died, economies have collapsed, the social lives of people have been distorted, most jobs are being done virtually, and a lot have lost their jobs.

But that’s not the issue I’m dwelling on here!

How many people know there was a Canada-wide telephony outage last Monday? Most people and organizations were unable to use their telephones or the Internet.

It could be painful for a society that has taken the use of such things for granted. Moreover, it was embarrassing in a situation where people and businesses depended on the services because of the pandemic.

But then, thank God for little mercies. By 6 pm, things were already getting back to normal.

What I took out of the incident is that the personnel and companies responsible had no choice but to satisfy the people. If they didn’t have a choice, the government itself would have been in a worse position.

The occurrence has shown there’s no perfect situation. It’s the people that should be critical of the services being provided.

Let’s imagine such an incident happened in an underdeveloped society. How long would it have taken for the situation to return to normal?
