Nigeria’s 2023! – Adewale Sobowale

It’s no fluke that the lacklustre government of Buhari, an infantry general who cannot neutralize the criminal Boko Haram., will end on May 29, 2023.

As if that isn’t enough, Nigeria’s instability will be a case study for economists, political scientists, sociologists, etc. That’s because with so many resources, manpower, minerals, weather, agriculture, etc, the country has nearly nothing to show for it.

Fast forward to the present!

I believe Nigerians are the best determinants of their future.

In the first instance, what are the characteristics we want in a president?

Is it someone who has read ‘all books’ in the world but has no balls? I mean the courage to distance himself from a corrupt and ineffective government.

Shall we choose someone so rich that he was boasting about being richer than a state in Nigeria? This fellow was reputed to have had a bullion van in his home, which he hasn’t debunked. The most prosperous state in the country is said to be under his grip. He has also enriched his family and associates.

When we look around the world, particularly the Western world, although people value education, it’s not the yardstick for picking democratic leaders.

Most nations in the West DO NOT have education as a prerequisite for political office.

We might also look at the idea that if someone gets tainted and the public gets to know, their political future might be doomed.

So, what are the characteristics desired in a political leader?

A person who likes assisting people not because of any future gain.

A person who is popular with the people because of the above. He might not be very well read. If he is, that’s an icing on the cake.

In any case, having education as prerequisite is a harm to democracy. Since democracy simply means a government of the people by the people for the people.

By the way, we shouldn’t support the youth because they are youths neither should we support women because they’re females. We should know what they can offer.

Above all, we the people need to stop asking to be bribed before we vote candidates in.

We shouldn’t use the hunger of today lead us into a four-year famine.

May we make the best choice!
