Give Us Our Okada! – Adewale Sobowale

I read the press conference addressed by the Lagos State commissioner for information and strategy and I began to wonder.

Why?

The governor, in his earlier address, had put the date for the ban as June 1. The commissioner, in his own statement said, “with immediate effect”.

You know, I’ve always tried to say things the way I see them.

Will this not be seen as a punishment to the have-nots?

Let’s discuss a related matter.

Lagos state says it’s a mega-city. I thought a state was different from a city.

Ok! Let’s agree for the sake of argument.

What are mega-cities?

I know of one. The land, rail and water transportation systems are all linked to give commuters a value for their money and time. The system is so efficient that motor owners would park their cars and take the public transit.

The state said about 45% of road accidents were caused by the okada.

Cool!

Who was responsible for the others?

In what state are Lagos roads generally?

Are they motorable?

Talks about riders not registering their machines or their being unknown elements are absolute balderdash.

By the way, I was used to the days of the Lagos Municipal Transport Service. What we have now is a far cry from those good old days.

Was it not in one of the state-run buses that a lady was ambushed and murdered?

But, there’s still hope if the people decide to have good servants, not dealers!
