Gains of Oillessness! – Adewale Sobowale

There’s no gain saying the fact that there’s a scarcity of petroleum products. Due to that reason, the simply impossible people of Nigeria have been uttering all sorts of things

Well, all I will say about what they’ve been saying is that they are talking like drunkards. You know the Yoruba say that it’s what the drunks were thinking of in their sane moments, no matter how brief, that they will say under the influence.

Most of us tend to look at the darker side of things. But the scarcity has a lot of advantages.

Did you know that many roads have been converted to football fields. I guess you know some roads are still good enough to be used for soccer. As I am typing this, I’m also receiving information that new soccer stars are being discovered. This, of course, will be to the advantage of our nation.

It is a given that the public power supply is an abject failure. However, we have taken that in good faith. That’s why most houses now generate their own electric power. Since there’s no fuel with the result that generators are now redundant, our phones can’t be changed.

That’s a good one. If we can’t charge our phones, we can’t transfer money to our relatives in the festive season. We can’t even communicate with them.

Since there’s no fuel, people can’t move around. As a result our rice, chicken and drinks are saved from consumption. That’s a lot of savings for us.

Since one couldn’t move, family life has improved considerably. The oza room is the better for it. Indeed, we should start seeing results in some nine months time.

Neighbours are getting to know each other better. In fact, meetings of Community Development Associations are recording more attendances.

We can proudly report that there has hardly been any accidents. The accident and orthopaedic departments of our hospitals have recorded fewer number of patients compared to other years.

Most people have been forced to celebrate where they reside. This has improved the economies of those places. Indeed, owners of neighbourhood spazas are smiling to their banks.

The most important one is that the scarcity has spoilt the market for armed robbers and kidnappers. This should have been their season, but since people can not but travel, they have been left in the cold.

Shouldn’t we thank government for all these?
