Even Birds! – Adewale Sobowale

When I consider the Nigerian situation, I end up marvelling at why we haven’t stopped the mess our so called leaders are giving us. But then, I tend to console myself with a Yoruba saying that, ‘Agbepo laja o jale, eni gba l’owo e gangan l’ole.’ That is, while the person who has actually stolen may not be the thief, the real culprits are those who knowingly deal in the proceeds of theft.

The Yoruba also say, ‘Omo yin o s’agbafo, o nka’so wa’le, e r’oju ole ee mu.’ It literally means if a person is not a dry cleaner and he brings clothes home, we should be suspicious of his being a thief.

Are we ever suspicious? Do we ever ask questions? Once they give us a Kongo of gari and a little kulikuli, oun to nse wa titan!

I tend to believe the fact that we never ask questions has led us to where we are now.

Even ordinary birds, insects and animals do prepare for the vagaries of the seasons. That’s why they amass things into their cocoons in the days of plenty.

But what do we as humans living in Nigeria have?

We have taken the government as our god. But is the government godly? God provides all our needs, can the government boast of such?

A kuku j’oye sanse radarada, that is a situation where we don’t have government is better than
crass.

Let’s think twice!
