Julian Assange is an Australian writer, journalist, publisher and activist. He founded Wikileaks in 2006.
In 2010, Sweden issued an arrest warrant against him for allegations of sexual assault. He managed to get into the Ecuadorian embassy in the U.K. in 2012.
He was even granted Ecuadorian citizenship while in political asylum at the embassy. In all, he was there till 2019.
I’m sure that such a thing can’t just happen in Nigeria. But in saner climes, embassies are seen as part of the territories of their home countries. Any attack on an embassy is seen as a declaration of war against the home country.
Another fact is that various parks in the U.K. exist where people can air their opinions. Hyde Park is one of them.
People are free to air whatever opinions they have while not disturbing the rights of others.
It’s with a great sense of wonder that I’m considering how government leaders in Nigeria could be visiting the U.K. and still fail to understand the basic principles of democracy simply.
I’m just puzzled!
