I won’t ever regret my not voting for Mr Muhammed Buhari!
Never ever!!
The man is gradually showing he is like a leopard which can never change its skin. His claim to being a democrat is all a ruse.
His case is one of the reasons why History is no longer being studied in our schools. The intelligent students will want to know how we arrived here, from a position of plenty to nothing!
There’s no doubting the fact that most of the politicians in the second republic. October 1, 1979 to December 31, 1983, were corrupt. This could especially be said of those in the ruling NPN.
However, if it is true that a people deserves its leadership, we should ask the question that who were those egging the politicians on?
Some of us had thought it was a passing phase. That when the people realised the futility of having a corrupt administration supervising the affairs of the nation, common sense would have prevailed.
We never realised that common sense is not that common!
While the citizenry were greeting each other, ‘Happy New Year’, we never realised some military personnel were brewing a rather strange new year gift for the nation.
They had overthrown the government!
A democratically elected government!!
Mr Buhari emerged as the head of state. Characteristically, he was annoyed with the civilian populace. He was especially mad at the politicians.
The crunch then started. As with all unconstitutional governments, the constitution was the first casualty. It was suspended.
The politicians were rounded up. They were to face tribunals which turned the laws of the land upside down. Instead of the accuser being compelled to prove that the accused committed the offence. it was the other way round.
The press also had its own share of punishment. Decree four was rolled out. Those who fell foul of the decree were jailed.
The regime instituted a foreign exchange decree. The decree stipulated the amount a person may take with them while travelling. Fela Kuti was to be a victim of the inhuman government. He had come into the country with his band of not less than thirty people from a foreign tour. He was to go on another tour in a few days time.
Fela did not see any sense in distributing the foreign currency in his possession amongst the band members. If he had, each of them could not have had more two pounds sterling.
Let’s assume Fela was guilty!
The judge who sat on his case was later to come out and seek Fela’s forgiveness because the judgement was written for him by the powers that be.
When the government organised a change in currency, it forbade anyone to bring in currency. However, thirty five suit cases filled with the Naira and ably supervised by Major Jokolo, Buhari’s aide-de-camp was brought in through Murtala Airport in Lagos.
Buhari’s government also attempted to kidnap Umaru Dikko, a prominent member of the PDP who had fled to the UK. The issue created a great diplomatic furore between Nigeria and the UK.
It probably led to the requirement by the British government that Nigerians visiting Britain must obtain visas. Being a member of the commonwealth, Nigerians, like other commonwealth countries, were not required to obtain visas when visiting commonwealth countries.
The case of the alleged drug pushers was particularly unfortunate. Three men were supposedly caught while trying to export drugs. The law as at when they were arrested did not attract a date with the hangman. However, the Buhari regime framed a decree and backdated it condemning people guilty of drug peddling to death!
The regime made another decree that people who were under eighteen years must not perform the Hajj. But when the regime was overthrown on August 27, 1985, Idi Agbon, Buhari’s alter ego was on a pilgrimage to Mecca.
On the flight with him was his fourteen year old son!
i’ve taken all this trouble to show that Buhari does not have any sympathy for democracy. He has been pretending all this while.
We’re now going to see the man under the masquerade!!!
