A study from the Natural Hazards Center has shown that the migrant farmworker community is one of the most vulnerable groups regarding natural disasters.
NPR reports that University of Florida researchers authored the study. Their research centers on the farmworker community in North Central Florida and explores the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia.
They found that a lack of data on the migrant farmworker population makes it challenging to allocate resources to an already marginalized community. However, nonprofits, churches, and other community groups are filling the gaps. Part of the solution is for local government and emergency management groups to work closely with them.
Migrant farmworkers travel to different areas to harvest crops, making it difficult to know where they are during disasters.
A University of Florida researcher, Miranda Carver Martin, said, Fluctuations in population levels make it very difficult to plan for how many people are we actually going to need to provide shelter for.”
