Libya’s Interior Minister Emad Al-Trabelsi has called for enhanced Italian support for voluntary migrant repatriation programs and security force capacity building during high-level talks in the capital on Sunday.
Libyan Express reports that at a meeting with Italian Ambassador Gianluca Alberini at the Interior Ministry headquarters, Al-Trabelsi emphasized the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation on migration management, focusing particularly on voluntary return initiatives.
“We are working to increase the pace of voluntary repatriation operations,” said Al-Trabelsi.
The discussions centred on mutual security interests, particularly addressing irregular migration flows affecting both Mediterranean nations. Officials explored strategies to enhance the capabilities of Libyan security units tasked with migration management.
Libya’s Anti-Illegal Immigration Authority continues to coordinate with the International Organization for Migration on voluntary return programs for migrants detained across the country, according to ministry officials.
Libya serves as a major transit point for migrants seeking to reach Europe shores, particularly Italy. The North African nation has faced significant challenges in managing migration flows whilst addressing humanitarian concerns.
