Overkill! – Adewale Sobowale

Proverbs 29:2
“When the rulers are good, the people are happy. When the rulers are evil, the people complain.”

I disagree with the quotation above!

Why?

There’s a Yoruba saying that a person will make his way right with one’s hands. However, the same Yoruba say whatever we’re going to do, we should first ask our “ori” or destiny.

Maybe we’ve consulted our ori and it has said we’re destined to suffer for quite a while before we start enjoying. Given that, there’s a saying that when God says I’m coming, it might take a lifetime. I’m wondering when life will be better for the hoi poloi in Nigeria.

Another reason I disagree with the bible quotation is that the current Nigerian ruler had assured us that he was going to continue with the no-motion rulership of the last administration.

We went out in large numbers to vote for the party, so where has the president wronged us?

I still maintain that some basic things must be wrong with us. We have never had a problem with the leadership in Nigeria. Our major problem is followership.

Aren’t we the ones who’ll go and collect a congo of rice or gari as empowerment? So, we think our empowerers are doing it for free.

Kai!
We are the real wise men!!

They are just businessmen and if their candidate is lucky to win, they will reap the rewards of their investment.

I understand the dollar is about 1,500 naira and the pound sterling is close to 2,000 naira.

Government and salaried workers are discussing a rise in the minimum wage. May I tell you for free that any wage increase which doesn’t take the informal sector into consideration is bound to fail?

May I give an example?

On a certain day, I travelled to Lagos from Abeokuta. When I got down at Osodi, I wanted to pee in one of the cubicles that dotted the place. I proffered five naira to the guy manning the place. To my consternation, he rejected it saying it had increased to twenty naira.

I asked why?

He replied with a ganjaried voice that “dollar don cost!”

As funny as it may sound, any salary increase without a thought for the informal economy will take inflation to hyperinflation.

Sure, inflation is affecting all countries across the globe. However, it’s the way we – government and people – react to it that will always determine its impact.

While praying that God should give us good leaders, we should not forget to plead with him to give us good citizens.

For now, all Nigerians have given birth to Ajantala. Of course, we must dance to his tunes.
