It’s no longer news that the first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, has left this world.
He was a man of achievements!
So many housing estates, so many schools, so many hospitals, a radio station, a tv station, a university, etc were founded by him.
To cap it all, he was on the verge of concluding plans for a metro-line to serve the teeming population of Lagos State when some soldiers sent the politicians parking on December 31, 1983 through a military coup d’etat.
It turned out that those soldiers were led by a major-general Mohammed Buhari.
If the soldiers had been nationalists, they would have allowed the metro to sail through. Since they wouldn’t allow it, the contractors took the Lagos State government to court and I understand the government had to pay damages.
The same Buhari happens to be the Nigerian president today.
He’s said to be mourning Jakande by shedding crocodile tears!
