That the experiment called Nigeria is failing does not need to be told anyone with discerning eyes. However, I just thought we should consider certain factors before the cloth turns into rags and the vultures land to finish off the carcasses.
In the first instance, I really don’t think Nigeria is in a position to split in a civilized manner. If we fail to split in a civilized manner, that means the war drums will sound.
Now, if that should be the case, how many wars shall we fight before the dust finally settles? Ok, I believe, out of all the three major ethnic groups, only the South West may remain as one.
But then, that in itself is even under doubts!
Even if we split into three nations, which I very much doubt, will the ruling class be left behind? I mean those who will seize an advantage out of our being factionalized.
It appears to me that we keep failing to realize a germaine fact. The ruling elites will always meet. They are similar to like birds which will always flock together.
But then, what are our chances of survival as a nation?
I will first state the fact that the common people do not need much from government. Indeed, if we can have security of our lives and provision of basic amenities like employment, roads, electricity, water, health service and even a good social welfare system, we’ll be more than satisfied.
But then, how can we have all these necessary things?
I would suggest, in my foolishness, that we must go back to the drawing board and find a basis for our nationhood. The present constitution which no representative of ours was part of its making should be jettisoned.
We must then elect true representatives of our people to fashion out a confederal constitution for us. Of course, in a confederation, there are provisions for the federating states to either continue being in the confederation or not.
The beautiful parts of confederation are that each federating unit will control their resources, they develop at their own pace, they call the shots and they don’t have to depend on the center, amongst others!
It’s not too late for us to reason!!
