The World Migration Report for the year 2024 has been released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). IOM was established in 1951 as a part of the UN system.. It started producing world migration reports in 2000.
Most people live in the countries of their birth. However, 1 in 30 are migrants.
The current global estimate is that there were around 281 million international migrants in the world in 2020. That equates to 3.6 percent of the global population.
The estimated number of international migrants has increased over the past five decades. The total estimated 281 people living in a country other than their countries of birth was 128 million more than in 1990 and over three times the estimated number in 1970.
There is currently a larger number of male than female international migrants worldwide and the growing gender gap has increased over the past 20 years. In 2000, the male to female split was 50.6 to 49.4 ;percent (or 88 million male migrants and 86 million female migrants). In 2020 the split was 51.9 to 48.1 percent, with 146 million male migrants and 135 million female migrants. \the share of female migrants has been decreasing since 2000, while the share of male migrants has increased by 1.3 percentage points.
Remittances:
International remittances are financial or in-kind transfers made by migrants directly to families or communities in their countries of origin. Following are the ten recipient countries for 2022:

3. China: $51b
4. Philippines: $38b
5. France: $30b
6. Pakistan: \429.9b
7. Egypt: $28.3b
8. Bangladesh: $21.5b
9. Nigeria: $20.1b
10. Germany: $19.3b
High-income countries are almost always rge main source of remittances. The United States has been the top remittance country for decades, with a total outflow of $79b in 2022, followed by Saudi Arabia($39b), Switzerland ($31.9b), and Germany ($25.6b}.
