Why are we like this?
I can still remember Prof. Wole Soyinka’s words that, ‘A tiger does not proclaim its tigritude, he pounces’.
That could be used to describe Nigerian politicians, most of whom are non performing. Their lethargy is very apparent in the non provision of basic things for the inactive masses.
It could be used to describe them because they always want to reap where they’ve not sown.
But then today is not for the sluggish politicians. It’s rather for their wives.
Yeah!
Their wives prefer to be referred to as, ‘Her Excellency, the First Lady!’
In the first place, is the position of, ‘first lady’, in the constitution?
Maybe I don’t have the current copy of the constitution of Nigeria. But the copy I have doesn’t give any constitutional role to political chief executives’ wives.
Yet, they are given all the paraphernalia of power like offices, staff, and, of course, salaries.
That means our people are being robbed in broad daylight.
But do you blame the politicians? I, personally; wouldn’t. Rather, I would blame us, the people who take all the nonsense without any complaints.
If we had complained at the right time in the right places, that is, the courts of law, the ugly incident that happened in Ekiti State could have been averted.
I’m not, in any way, absolving the students. And, by the way, there’re some things called rubber bullets. I wouldn’t think our policemen are in possession of such.
But then, we’re our own worst enemies!
We keep on making politicians who are supposed to serve us larger than they are in real life. Unfortunately, it’s to our own detriment.
Whatever one would not take as a wealthy man, it’s as a miser he would have started rejecting it.
Could that be true of us?
