Ta n mo! – Adewale Sobowale

I love Yoruba!

I love the language because it is extra rich. When one studies Yoruba well, one will definitely not lack the sarcasm embedded in the language. I remember there used to be a television programme in the seventies and early eighties named ‘Ta n mo’.

Ta n mo was a programme of riddles. See what is happening now, are they not riddles? I mean, these millions of naira are being found here and there.

People are not coming out to admit that they are the owners. It is strange. It is quite unlike Nigerians. In Nigeria, I used to know, at least, a mentally challenged man would have come up to claim ownership of at least one of the booties! I was even thinking there would have been people who would have passable reasons for keeping such amounts in places other than banks.

Ojo ni wa, all of us are chicken-hearted.

And we will be complaining about the ‘country being hard’. We have chosen to become what the Yoruba call a rowo magbe, a person who sees money and refuses to pick it up.

Nigeria is becoming good. So, one can leave his money outside, go in, and sleep without batting an eyelid.

God is great! We must thank Him for little mercies.

Maybe Nigeria is becoming better. Perhaps we are getting to a stage where we can distinguish between being shameful and shameless.

Maybe, maybe….

Until we know the owners, the government should use the money to provide basic amenities for the people. Until then, I still maintain that we didn’t have any business with the recession in the first place.
