I went to my farmland earlier this week, ready to see if one could put in some effort at reducing the food crisis being faced in Nigeria now. The farmland is government owned.
I had called the farm officer intimating him of my plans to start working on the land again. So, when I got there, it was only natural for me to sound him out.
The guy was very honest. He could get a tractor to clear hectares of land for me. He even offered me a place where it wasn’t necessary to use fertiliser.
The land is so fertile!!!
He made a lot of arrangements for me. However, my inquisitive nature made me ask if the land was free of Fulani cattle rearers.
He looked at me without blinking and replied that my crops will be at the mercy of herds of cattle. I may not even be safe!
Why should I invest in such a risky venture when I can use my money elsewhere and even get better returns? Until we solve this senseless ‘occupation’ of our farmlands by the herdsmen and their cattle, I am on strike as far as farming is concerned!!!
