I’m often amused when artistes in ‘third’ world countries get annoyed when they are not given elite awards by ‘first’ world institutions.
A lot of dust was raised by some Nigerians who felt Angelina Kodjo didn’t deserve the Grammy. They would have preferred some Nigerian singer to clinch the award.
Quite another dust is being raised by certain Jamaicans who feel the Soja band didn’t deserve the grammy.
I would say the earlier we learned what the people giving the awards want the better.
The alternative is for us to institute our own awards!
