Many of us have heard the word chutzpah used in terms of a person having positive audacity. But I bet only a few realize it could be used to describe people who display negative audacity.
There are some positions which are normally reserved for the elderly. Senior citizens are often expected to have experienced the best and the worst life could offer.
That’s why I personally have a soft spot for the Ibadan system of picking traditional rulers. Before becoming an Olubadan, a person must have passed through either the egbe agba or the balogun systems to become the Otun or the Balogun Olubadan. It takes decades to groom the person.
The major point of this post is that when one is experienced, they are least likely to make mistakes. But when one has a selfish motif, even if he’s a Methuselah, his selfishness will override his being reasonable.
That’s the way I viewed the reports that some of the pastors who supervised services last Sunday in Nigeria are now apologizing to the government. At least I know one state had issued an order restraining gatherings of more than fifty people.
It’s not for the safety of the politicians but that of the populace. Those pastors couldn’t say they were not aware of the order. In any case, ignorance, they say, is no excuse in law.
I think those who defied a government order should be made face the music. This should be done in earnest to prove the law is not for just the poor.
