There’s this Yoruba saying that It won’t be so bad for someone to be pleading with their dead ward to come to save them on earth.
But as things are, our wards aren’t dead. In fact, they’ve stopped being “lazy” and hearkened to our helplessness in doing what’s right.
They’ve obviously realized that we are not in a position to help ourselves. They seem to be obeying another Yoruba saying that when a deer gets old, he starts sucking his child’s breast.
If not for them, we wouldn’t have seen any significant change from the old order in the disputed presidential election.
But I think there’s still a lot for them to do for our political system.
In their various ways, they should help us rebuild our collapsing institutions. I’m aware of the fact that they might not have struck the gold that the presidency is.
However, I’m of the opinion that they can start from the various spheres in their control.
For instance, they need to ask why any government should source its internal revenue service to an agent, they need to ask why we don’t have potable water, they need to ask why we don’t have light, they need to ask why the roads are not motorable, etc.
I believe some of these institutions are even within their purview. All they need do is act patriotically and get things going.
We’re pleading with them to “come down to Macedonia” and give us a hand!
