A song that was popular in my, not so far away, youth was about kampala,
Kampala te ra
Se ti sanwo e!
It’s a song about whether or not someone has paid for what they are wearing.
Don’t mind my digression jare.
This post is all about Nigerian public officers dressing to match for whatever occasion.
I believe I wrote about about government officials dressing for coronavirus. There was a particular governor who was dressed, with his entourage, of course, in what I’ll call the coronavirus uniform.
However, I noticed a woman walking just beside the governor who wasn’t so dressed. I tend to think that woman is one of the flotsam and jetsam of society. Apparently, she does not need to be protected from the virus.
But in actual fact, the public officials don’t need to be so dressed. But then we’re all comedians.
In the amotekun show, state houses of assembly were trying to outdo each other in passing bills that will legalize the amotekun. Oh well, it’s something they should first have done before the launching and subsequent publicity.
But let’s thank God for little mercies, I believe all of them have passed bills legalizing the regional security outfit.
But then, I know of a certain house of assembly whose members were all decked in amotekun outfits.
I want to believe in the words of Prof Wole Soyinka who says, ‘A tiger does not proclaim its tigritude, he pounces.’
But then who are the payers of all these uniforms? I hope they are not tax payers. Like I once predicted, I won’t be surprised if coronavirus or even amotekun uniforms are picked for social functions!
Adewale Sobowale.
