Guilt Of A People – Adewale Sobowale

The English language is very interesting. It is for its sarcasm. Most of us for whom it is a second language are not aware of this intricacy.

For instance, some nations are described as ‘developing’ nations. In most cases, these are African and Asian nations. One thing that is common to this nations is poverty. They are underdeveloped even in the midst of plenty.

We have been described as the most religious nation on earth. Aren’t we? But note that being religious does not necessarily mean being Godly.

On another occasion, we have been described as the happiest people in the universe. This is a vivid description of the average Nigerian. We are always ‘suffering and smiling’.

Our religionism is so serious that anytime a symbol of that religion is thought to be violated, we go haywire. We display our Hobbesian nature.

Take the case of the woman who was savagely murdered in Kano. She was said to have blasphemed the name of prophet Mohammed(peace be unto him)

We all fought to give her a summary justice. We did not even need to go to a shariah court so that she can defend herself. No! She was declared guilty by our different frustrations.

For that primitive act, we will get a visa to Aljanah where seven untouched virgins each will be awaiting us for our act of barbarity.

That was why we not only severed our victim’s head but we hung our ‘trophy’ on a pole and went round the town singing our hearts out.

Do not listen to unbelievers who are insisting that our treatment of that kafir has dehumanized us!
