Emerging Trends – Adewale Sobowale

I am familiar with teaching Civics Education in Nigeria. One of the topics in Civics is Emerging Issues. In Emerging Issues, HIV/AIDS, Drug Addiction, etc are taught.

However, various issues are always emerging in Nigeria. I was thinking of writing about the apathy that characterized Ogun state local government election before news filtered in that some judges have been harassed and arrested.

Now, I am not in support of any judge. However, are some of their human rights not being infringed upon?

Why is it that it was the Department of State Security that took it upon itself to perform a so called ‘sting operation’, in the residences of some handpicked judges? It has turned out that some of them are handling cases that involve the executive arm of government.

I thought it was the duty of the National Judicial Council to investigate and discipline corrupt judges where and when the need arises.

Moreover, does this government have any right to behave like the proverbial kettle calling the pot black? At least, there have been more than a couple of rumours of some of the executive members of the government or their associates committing various financial offences which are yet to be investigated, not to talk of being prosecuted.

Like I said earlier, I am not advocating that crimes should not be punished. However, the due process must be followed.

And we must always remember that what is sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander!
