I eventually went to the store. When I got there, I asked a welcoming sales associate where I could get electric irons, as if they used coal irons there.

That one said I should go to the backside of the large store. She further said I should look for where shoes were sold because the iron section was just next to it.

So, I strolled to the end of the store and there I saw various types of irons with different cost implications. I went straight for the cheapest.

Ani ko sa ti s’ise!

But there was a snag. There was only one. I then proceeded to ask another associate whether it was for sale. That one said it was only a sample.

Therefore, I decided to settle for a more expensive one. I was in the process of picking it up when I received a phone call.

The caller said they had been looking for me because I had refused to pay tax for two years. According to her, it was against the law and upon conviction, I’m liable to either a fine of twenty thousand dollars or five years in prison.

In the same vein, she asked whether I had a good defence lawyer to handle my, ‘criminal case’.

She said I should call a particular number to hear more. The number is +16477937407.

I promptly called the number. I must confess to you that I had become a jelly. When I called the number, the woman asked for my name and address which I innocently gave her. She even asked for the area code.

I then told her that I had not spent six months in the country not to talk of two years. She asked where I was, when I told her, she said I should wait right there because she would call the police to go and arrest me.

Something just told me that was not the way justice worked in civilised nations. I just went outside the store to another chain of stores where I knew there were public conveniences.

I went to use their bathroom.

Igbe ojo!

Then I made my way home to prepare for work. I didn’t even wait to eat, just in case the woman carried out her threat of getting me arrested for failing to pay tax for two years.

When I closed at work, I conveniently forgot to get down from the bus at the closest bus stop to my residence. Rather, I chose to go a stop further. My apartment is on a major road, so I could observe what was going on from the bus.

I then had a chat with a lawyer friend in the United States. After telling her what happened, I said I would be looking for a lawyer very presently.

That one was just laughing at me. She said if I had so much money, I should invest it. She then said after I dropped the phone, I should Google the number.

When I did, it turned out to be a spam!
