“All is fair in war,” according to John Lily in the “Anatomy of Wit” published in 1578. It is not, therefore, surprising that to renew their visas, Russia is allegedly sending thousands of migrants to the battle fronts against Ukraine.
According to officials familiar with the situation, Russia has said it wouldn’t renew visas for foreigners unless they agree to join the military.
The Russian government has also resorted to enlisting prisoners.
However, according to sources, some foreigners have been able to bribe officials to remain in the country while avoiding military service.
Ukrainian intelligence has been said to have revealed that Russia has launched a recruitment drive to hire foreign mercenaries from at least 21 countries, including many African states.
Army recruitment provides generous signing incentives and salaries to those willing to serve as contract soldiers.
Recruiters have allegedly targeted migrants and students who had previously sought jobs in Russia. They have also enticed others with promises of lucrative work before forcing them into the military.
