Sometime in the not-too-far past, I used to visit Togo frequently. Of course, you can only visit Togo from Nigeria through the Republic of Benin. At least, that’s the only route I know.
Since the hotel I usually stayed in was on the Togo-Ghana border, I usually used the opportunity to visit the beautiful Kwame Nkrumah’s country.
During my visits, I discovered living costs in the Benin Republic and Togo were inexpensive compared to Nigeria and Ghana.
Incidentally, while Nigeria and Ghana used to be colonized by the British, the French colonized Togo and Benin.
Looking at the lifestyles of Nigerians and Ghanaians, they seemed to be more “civilized” than the Togolese and the Beninois, respectively.
But have Ghana and Nigeria been able to sustain their so-called civilized lives?
I wouldn’t think so, with due respect.
This is because the figures from a Google search show that many people are not living well.
While Nigeria’s July 2024 inflation rate was 33.4 per cent, Ghana’s was 20.9 per cent, Benin’s was 1 per cent, and Togo’s was 4 per cent.
Meanwhile, the United States inflation rate was 2.5 per cent in July 2024, the UK’s was 2.2 per cent, and Canada’s was 2.5 per cent.
Even Ukraine had an inflation rate of 5.4 per cent in July 2024.
I would have thought the best thing to do was admit that things are bad. But as long as the government’s ears keep telling the authorities what they would rather hear, we will continue immersing most of the people in the murky waters of poverty. In contrast, the rulers keep wasting our commonwealth.
Let’s get off our high horses!
