Pedro Sanchez, the Prime Minister of Spain and a long time supporter of Palestinian rights believes the recognition of Palestine as a state is a way of reaching a two-state solution. He also sees it as an end to the seemingly unending conflicts between the two states.
However, he risks the Israeli state’s wrath.
Israel’s war on Gaza is in its seventh month. Almost 34,000 Palestinians have been killed.
Spain may recognise Palestine as a state by July. It is urging its neighbours to follow suit.
Sanchez said, “The time has come for the international community to once and for all recognize the state of Palestine. It is something that many EU countries believe we have to do jointly, but if this is not the case, Spain will adopt its own decision.”
Out of the 193 member states of the United Nations, 139 consider Palestine as a member state. Those states include Iceland, Poland, Romania, Russia, China and Nigeria.
However, the European Union as whole does not recognize the Palestinian state, nor do The United States, France and the United Kingdom.
Spain, Ireland, Malta and Slovenia are all in favour of the idea.
