Tourists and Hollywood investors have found a New Haven in Sierra Leone.
The New York Post reports that the West African country is now the most exciting place to visit on the continent.
It’s offering a new solar-powered airport, eased visa restrictions and the type of authentic cultural experiences that can be challenging to find in the continent’s more crowded countries.
Actor Idris Elba, whose father was born in the country and received citizenship in 2017, wants to rebrand the West African country. He is building a sustainable smart city on Sherbro Island with his business partner Siaka Stevens, grandson of the former Sierra Leonean president.
The project will develop a rural island the size of Chicago, home to about 40,000 people. It will also bring wind-powered electricity to the country for the first time. Current plans include a resort and ecotourism experiences alongside Sherbro’s 50 miles of palm-tree-lined beaches, vibrant Krio board house villages, and mangrove forests.
