A 42-year-old Winnipeg man, Semere Haile, has been charged with human smuggling for driving six migrants into Manitoba, according to the RCNP.
CBC reports that five men from various parts of Africa and a permanent resident of Canada were allegedly arrested for allegedly crossing the US border into Canada two weeks ago. Haile was charged after driving the men and their luggage east of the Canadian Border Agency’s port of entry in Emerson, Man., on September 28.
Mounties and the United States Border Patrol became aware of the group around 10.35 p.m., according to police.
The passengers are from Sudan, Chad, and Mauritania, and one is a permanent resident of Canada. They were arrested under the Customs Act and were taken to Winnipeg Provincial Court on Wednesday.
According to RCMP, the driver was released from custody on various conditions and went to court on Monday.
