Job Scouting! – Adewale Sobowale

When scouting for a job in a foreign land, so many things come into play. The first one is that even if you have a triple doctorate, they would always want you to have their own countries’ certification.

In any case, most western countries hold whatever certifications are issued by third world countries with a pinch of salt. You could always sense some silent guffaw when they peruse your cv.

But then there are some talents which do not need certification. These are simply in the crafts. For instance, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, fine arts, writing, etc.

For me, I want to, for the first time in my life, use my scribblings to earn a living. . This is because where I come from, the fact that everyone is an artiste of sorts do not make us appreciate any form of art. Nigeria itself is a very large theatre.

Where we would have, the fact that the economy is bad has often led us to just saying in passing that the artist is good. The situation, which has a k leg has made us to forget that, obe to dun, owo lo pa..

As an aside, I would say that in this city, you can’t enter any metro station without seeing itinerant musicians practising their trades. The appreciative crowd does not fail to offer them some coins. I’m not saying everyone does, but even at that, how many people really understand the arts?

Since I’m yet to put my cv on the computer system for one stupid reason or the other., would be employers have not been able to see what little writing I could do.

Writing da bi afise ni.

One younger friend of mine, whose wife just got delivered of a daughter told me once that it’s the spirits that bring my writing thoughts.

E gbo soro niyen?

What he failed to say was whether the spirits were the evil ones or the nice ones like the famous angel Gabriel. Just like Nigerians who never asked what kind of change Buhari And APC were bringing.

And here we are. A nation going from frying pan to fire!

Like I was saying, to put body and soul together one needs to be doing something. I then considered my options relative to the cash they would bring in.

The very first one that came to my mind was to work as a mortician. I just felt there would be an underemployment in that area. People have even said that the white man hardly dies from armed robbery, accidental discharge, murder by herdsmen, death from carbon monoxide as a result of having to use generators perpetually since we are always in darkness because of lack of electricity supply, and so on. As a result, they die very well.

In contrast, the white man dies from over enjoyment like not eating the right diets, obesity, starving himself to death in solidarity with the developing world, and all those other things Nigerians would count as not fit to die for. The white man dies decently and so, there will be little work for me to do while earning so much.

Please, do wish me well in my yet to be found job. If you don’t, I will certainly know it’s bad belle.

PS; The more you study my posts, the better understanding you’ll have.
