The waiting game seems to be over and like the proverbial elephant that does not forget, Israel has finally attacked Iran.
NBC News reports that Israel has confirmed that it launched “precise strikes on military targets in Iran” early Saturday local time. The Israel Defense Forces said the strikes were in response to “months of continuous attacks” from October 1 when Iran launched nearly ballistic missiles at Israel.
The initial strikes appear limited to military sites and not Iranian nuclear facilities or oil fields, according to sources.
Israel is also intensifying its campaigns in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
Although the US has given a heads-up about the strikes, it was not involved in the action, US defense officials said.
Israel’s retaliation on Iran marks the emergence of an escalating decades-long shadow war into the light.
The strikes mark the first time Isreal has led an attack on Iranian soil. Iran, which primarily relies on Soviet-era technology and does not match Israeli weapons’ sophistication, is not likely to be able to do much to repel the attacks.
