Tomorrow, Nigerians will observe the nation’s 61st-year dependence.
In actual fact, I don’t think there has ever been a year when the chips have been so much against the country.
Instability has plagued the nation to a standstill. I hear in some areas, people dare not travel outside a 25km radius for fear of being attacked by hoodlums.
Boko Haram is yet to be defeated!
Undergraduates and pupils are being kidnapped almost every day, yet we claim we have rulers.
When Mr Buhari unconstitutionally took over power in 1983, what were the reasons he gave for his unholy act?
Are those things not a child’s play compared to the happenings in today’s Nigeria?
How much is Nigeria owing? To leaders who know what to do, that might not be a problem. However, it’s more than apparent that these people don’t just know how to rule a nation.
How have our leaders been able to gain the confidence of the people? If they had been able to do so, there wouldn’t have been such an increase in the urge to carve different nations out of Nigeria.
Getting employment for graduates is hardly a possibility. Yet, our so-called leaders will be reechoing JFK by saying, ‘Don’t ask what Nigeria will do for you….’ But then, the USA of those days had offered the youth certain things, one of which is America will stand by any of its nationals, especially those who are defending it.
Is it the same case with Nigeria?
Yet, I wouldn’t blame our so-called rulers. I would rather blame us, the people.
Are we not the ones who’ll take a pair of flip-flops to vote those we know are not capable into power? Are we not the ones who’ll take a sachet of gari plus some kulikuli to vote them in?
Are we not the ones who have refused to vote according to our conscience but according to how much stipend they’ve been able to give us?
If we fail to do some rethinking and do what is right, I’m so sorry, the situation might even be worse than it is now!
