Jose Ratul Mulino, the presidential frontrunner in Panama has vowed to block the Darien Gap.
The Darien Gap is a swampy jungle on Panama’s border with Columbia and it has become an ordeal for many US-bound migrants. However, some experts are criticizing the idea as unworkable and potentially dangerous.
The Darien Gap is run by criminal groups and corrupt officials making it one of the world’s most dangerous border crossings. In 2023, over half a million people crossed up from 24,000.
Mulino said, “The border of the United States, instead of being in Texas, moved to Panama. We’re going to close the Darien and we’re going to repatriate all these people. But he did not say how he would do it. However, he promised to respect migrants’ human rights.
