Once upon a time, at church bazaars, big men with legitimate sources of income would go to buy items on auction for a great sum.
One Guinea!
By the way, a guinea was equal to £1, 1s, or better one pound one. One pound one was equal to twenty one shillings.
It was the equivalent of two Naira and ten kobo!
Those were the days when Nigeria and Nigerians were still innocent.
People did not place a great value on money but on the Omoluabiness of fellow men.
Money itself was hardly available.
Those were the days when every adult was regarded as a parent for even their non biological children. Social deviance was then a rarity.
People didn’t have to barricade themselves under the guise of false security. Indeed, the beauty of homes with well tended flowers was so apparent.
What do we have now?
But then, in the European countries, I believe things are still the same.
Or nearly the same!
We used to have recreational parks. The night life was bam, with people having an array of night clubs to attend.
Food wasn’t expensive.
Once you finished your school certificate examinations, a job was waiting for you. Employers actually went into the universities to recruit final year students.
Many of them had to choose which employer they wished to work with.
Government budgets DID not go beyond the million!
Yet, the governments of those days were able to achieve so much.
We could go on and on.
I believe it’s when we have a sense of history that we’ll know where and when things really went wrong. That will, of course, enable us to make necessary adjustments.
We need to go back to the basics!
