About 165,000 Liberians became homeless on Monday after the Ghanaian authorities demolished the camp where they have been living for more than 30 years.
The Liberians are civil war refugees who went to Ghana during the brutal civil war in which over 200,000 were killed, and thousands were mutilated and raped. The wars occurred between 1989 and 2003.
After the civil wars, the United Nations ruled in 2006 that refugees were safe to return home. However, many who were traumatised and without connections chose to remain in the Libderia Camp in Buduburam, Ghana.
But last week, the traditional rulers who own the land ordered the camp’s demolition. By last Monday, a large portion of the camp had been demolished.
